Objective
As a Mid-level Mechanical Engineer, you will leverage your advanced technical skills and engineering expertise to contribute to the successful execution of complex engineering projects. Your role will involve leading design, procurement and execution efforts, providing innovative solutions, and ensuring that project objectives are achieved efficiently and effectively. You will be expected to mentor junior engineers, engage with clients, manage deliverables, collaborate with junior engineers and uphold the company's mission and professional standards.
Responsibilities
On a typical day, the incumbent’s work may include the following:
Technical support and client interaction:
· Lead the creation and management of detailed project quotations/proposals.
· Plan and oversee medium to large-scale design projects, ensuring all project deliverables are met.
· Conduct and lead design reviews, ensuring compliance with engineering design and performance specifications.
· Identify and manage project risks, ensuring thorough due diligence is performed.
· Develop procurement documentation such as scopes of works and specifications.
· Assist with fabrication and construction reviews, quality management and commissioning.
· Undertake requests for information, quotations and cost estimation, esp. during study phases.
· Manage and report on
Design and simulation:
· Perform complex and high-risk design tasks, including Bulk Materials Handling (inc. conveyors), Discreet Element Modelling (DEM), Finite
Element Analysis (FEA) for mechanical systems and dynamic hydraulic modelling.
· Lead the conceptualization and design of purpose-built infrastructure, ensuring functionality and efficiency.
· Analyse and validate the mechanical functionality of systems, recommending improvements as necessary.
· Specify and design electro-mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic control systems.
· Develop and approve manufacturing drawings in accordance with company and industry standards.
Collaboration and communication:
· Interface with cross-functional team members to find optimal solutions for clients.
· Interpret and review technical drawings and schematics, ensuring accuracy and compliance.
· Collaborate with team members to implement operating procedures and provide technical information.
· Facilitate reviews with discipline engineers, team members and client stakeholders.
· Ensure adherence to company CAD and PDM standards, promoting consistency and quality.
Process improvement and innovation:
· Drive efficiency improvements, digitisation, and workflow streamlining initiatives.
· Ensure detailed designs adhere to applicable ISO, SABS, and customer standards.
· Specify system components or direct modifications of products to ensure conformance with engineering design and performance
specifications.
· Implement innovative solutions to enhance project delivery and client satisfaction.
Qualifications and experience
· Academic Qualification: A B-Tech or BSC degree in Mechanical Engineering and Professional Registration with ECSA is required.
· Experience: At least 5 years of experience in the design of mechanical engineering components, with a focus on complex design and
project management, preferably in the mining industry.
Key skills and competencies
Technical skills
· Proficiency in 3D CAD software, including DEM FEM or other model development and customisation.
· Experience with simulation software and tools such as Autodesk AEC, Inventor, Solidworks, Abaqus, Simulia, MSC, ANSYS, Altair as may
be applicable.
· Advanced Simulation and Analysis: Expertise in simulation modelling, statistical analysis, and optimization methodologies, particularly in
structural and fluid analysis.
