Job function: Engineering

Experience required: 5 Years

What You’ll Be Part Of

Our client is seeking a mid-level Water Resources Engineer to support and grow its Virginia Beach practice. This role focuses on drainage, stormwater management, and hydrologic and hydraulic modeling for transportation and municipal infrastructure projects across Virginia.

The position is based within a multi-discipline civil engineering office with a strong transportation portfolio and long-standing public-sector clients. The successful candidate will contribute to technical design delivery while progressing toward increased responsibility in project coordination, mentoring, and technical leadership.

What You’ll Own

  • Develop drainage and stormwater management designs in accordance with Virginia regulations, VDOT standards, and client specifications
  • Perform hydrologic and hydraulic analyses using industry-accepted methodologies and modeling tools
  • Prepare erosion and sediment control designs for transportation and municipal projects
  • Review survey data, plans, and technical documentation to support design decisions
  • Produce engineering deliverables including plans, reports, specifications, scopes, and cost estimates
  • Manage multiple concurrent design assignments with limited supervision
  • Support construction phase services, including RFIs, submittal reviews, and field coordination
  • Coordinate with internal teams, contractors, consultants, and public agencies
  • Mentor junior engineers and provide technical guidance as required

What Success Requires

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering with a Water Resources emphasis from an ABET-accredited program
  • 4–10 years of professional experience in Water Resources engineering
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in Virginia or ability to obtain within six months of hire
  • Demonstrated experience with hydrologic modeling using TR-55, TR-20, and Rational Method
  • Hydraulic modeling experience using HEC-RAS, HY-8, HydroCAD, or similar software
  • Proven background in drainage and stormwater management design
  • Experience delivering erosion and sediment control designs
  • Prior experience working with local and state public-sector clients

What Makes You Stand Out

  • Hydrologic modeling and watershed analysis
  • Hydraulic modeling for culverts, channels, and floodplains
  • Drainage and stormwater management system design
  • Erosion and sediment control planning and compliance
  • Knowledge of Virginia stormwater regulations
  • Transportation and municipal infrastructure project delivery
  • MicroStation OpenRoads Designer
  • PCSWMM or comparable modeling tools
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines
  • Strong technical documentation and communication skills

Additional Strengths

  • Virginia DEQ Certified Stormwater Management Combined Administrator
  • Familiarity with VDOT and Locally Administered Project requirements
  • Experience using GIS in support of water resources analysis

Your Work Environment

  • Office-based role approximately 60 percent of the time
  • Occasional field work in varying weather conditions
  • Light physical activity may be required, including lifting up to 25 lbs

Organizational Context

This is a specialized Water Resources engineering role. Candidates must have direct, hands-on experience delivering water resources projects and applying hydrologic and hydraulic modeling in a professional setting. General civil engineering experience without dedicated Water Resources project responsibility will not be considered a strong match.

Preference is given to candidates with Virginia-based project experience, familiarity with state and local stormwater regulations, and experience supporting transportation or municipal infrastructure clients.

Before You Apply

To confirm that you have carefully reviewed the full job description, please include the phrase “Familiarity with VDOT and Locally Administered Project requirements” at the beginning of your application or cover note. This step helps ensure applicants have read the role details and can follow application instructions. Applications submitted without the phrase may receive lower priority during the initial review

Each resume will be reviewed by a member of the recruitment team. Candidates whose experience closely aligns with the role requirements will be contacted regarding the next stage of the hiring process. Due to the volume of submissions, not all applicants will receive follow-up communication.
