Job Summary
The Consultant Histopathologist will maintain the highest clinical standards in the management of Diagnostic and Molecular Pathology patients, delivering a quality-focused and timely service. This role includes teaching and training of junior staff, participation in clinical governance, and active involvement in continuing medical education.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Duties
Provide comprehensive diagnostic histopathology and cytopathology services in collaboration with colleagues.
Conduct a wide range of molecular techniques and participate in a frozen section service.
Manage and interpret over 35,000 histology, 1,600 cytology, and 900 autopsy requests annually.
Share responsibility for the day-to-day management of the Diagnostic and Molecular Pathology department.
Teaching and Training
Teach and train junior medical staff, medical students, and biomedical scientists.
Contribute to the structured teaching program of the University of Exeter Medical School.
Actively participate in continuing medical education and revalidation processes.
Clinical Governance and Audit
Engage in clinical governance activities and audits to improve service quality.
Attend and contribute to departmental Training, Education, Research, and Audit (TERA) meetings.
Research
Promote and participate in departmental research activities as appropriate.
Professional Responsibilities
Ensure compliance with GMC guidelines and Trust policies, including health and safety regulations.
Uphold confidentiality and professional standards at all times.
Participate in managerial duties, including budgetary responsibilities when applicable.
Requirements
Essential Qualifications
Full and Specialist registration (with a license to practice) with the General Medical Council (GMC).
FRCPath or equivalent qualification, or evidence of working towards it.
Clinical experience in Histopathology and Cytopathology.
Desired Skills and Experience
Strong clinical and personal credibility with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Experience in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
Familiarity with clinical audit and governance.
Ability to develop specialist diagnostic services and a keen interest in two or more areas of clinical practice (e.g., GI, gynaecological, or dermatopathology).
