Controls & Instrumentation Design Engineer – SCADA | Substation & BESS Projects Location: London or Glasgow (Hybrid – 3 days in-office, 2 from home) At Empower Talent, we partner with forward-thinking companies working on some of the most exciting projects. Right now, we’re helping one of them find a Controls and Instrumentation Design Engineer to lead the design of SCADA systems across substation and battery storage projects. This is a key role for someone who enjoys taking the lead on technical design, collaborating with high-performing teams, and contributing to the energy transition. What you’ll be doing: Leading SCADA system design for substation and BESS projects – from concept through to delivery Creating and reviewing design documents – points lists, drawings, configuration files, and more Designing hardware, networks, HMI screens, fibre networks, and data links Supporting quality checks, specification writing, factory testing, and commissioning (on-site or remote) Providing technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers What we’re looking for: A strong background in control system design for power or energy infrastructure A degree in engineering and experience delivering projects independently Someone who enjoys solving technical problems and working collaboratively Ideally, you’ll also bring: 5+ years of experience in substation and/or BESS control systems Familiarity with protocols like IEC 61850, DNP3, Modbus, and OPC Experience with virtual environments (e.g. VMware) and network tools like Wireshark Knowledge of UK NIS cybersecurity standards HMI screen development and a solid understanding of automation systems Chartered or working towards professional registration This is a chance to join a well-established team working on meaningful projects in the energy sector.
